- What is happening
Social Media Lab is based on the hypothesis that by using new social media, citizens can play a creative rather than passive role. Through this shift, they can become important agents for social innovation. The Internet and the current phenomenon of audiovisual media and ICT convergence, democratisation and mobility provides a production context in which citizens can innovate. Giving citizens access to and preparing them for new social media, technological devices and different civic contexts with their needs and opportunities, produces a point of intersection where citizens go from being passive spectators to creators of knowledge.
In order to act as a catalyst for this change, our actions and projects are specifically focused on the local communities in Cornellà del Llobregat. We are especially interested in young people and senior citizens, because they are particularly responsive agents.
ICT empowerment and new social media literacy: nowadays, the process of creating knowledge involves learning computer and audiovisual languages so as to master the ability of communicating and expressing oneself: role-playing games, simulations, appropriation, multi-tasking, distributed knowledge, collective intelligence, judgement, cross-media communication, networking and negotiation.
How will we do this?
Through innovative projects: involving several players and using new social media.
By working with users: re-designing research projects with the help of users and applying participatory evaluation methodologies.
By creating prototypes for hybrid web devices (mash-ups) online using available tools, preferably open source. By interacting through available online options, using the Anella Cultural or adapting to the devices that are feasible within each given context.
By empowering individuals and communities.
In an interdisciplinary fashion: appropriating the Constructivist idea of “learning by doing”, applying creativity to prototyping and the problem-solving of design thinking and computational thinking as well as social media literacy in the convergent area of mobile media and the web.
By focusing: within the context of the on-going crisis, it is necessary to focus efforts through social innovation projects and actions that are efficient and deliver an impact and performance.
By connecting: areas like music and sports are two cultural fields that connect with people and transcend borders. Participating in projects and networks that place us within an international scope will make it possible to participate in future, global projects.
By collaborating: new online tools turn collaboration into a method that is essential to the knowledge society.
By documenting methodologies and extrapolative practices.
By communicating and explaining what we have achieved and the problems we have encountered so that we can take on new challenges and opportunities and turn them into new projects.
